Avemar left Stuart, Florida, on Friday and has just arrived in St. Augustine.
What was planned as a 48-hour sail turned into quite an adventure!
Sometime last week, after I checked the NASA launch calendar, SpaceX decided to move the date for one of their rocket launches and that closed off a large section of the ocean, causing us to change course East, further into the Atlantic to the edge of the Gulf Stream.
The additional 30 or 40 miles we had to sail slowed down our northern progress, and in that time, the predicted shift in the winds to blow from the north met us at 0130 on the morning of Saturday, November 18.
Cruise ships and tankers were also routed outside the security zone, so it was a busy night of avoiding ships while beating with shortened sails in 25 knots of wind in 9-12 foot seas.

We’ve been posting pictures and short notes multiple times per day.
I don’t believe subscribers are alerted to new messages, so if you want to see all of the updates from Avemar, keep an eye on the Notes tab.
Avemar will begin a trip from St. Augustine to the Florida Keys on Friday, and we will be posting regularly.
Happy Thanksgiving!
